Where there's a will, there's a way...

At the end of the day, you have to want to get out of debt – working out a budget is all very well, but it will prove a feckless task if you do not stick to it and stop spending when you don’t have to.

It takes discipline to live by a budget; cut up your credit and store cards so that you do not fall into the trap of spending on them again once you’ve paid off some of the balance. If you struggle to live within your means, then consider taking out enough cash for the week and then give your debit or cash card to a friend or family member to remove the temptation.

Setting yourself goals can help to keep your spending reigned in when the urge to shop becomes too much. For example:

  • decide that you will pay off a certain credit card within six months
  • or get rid of your overdraft by the new year

Like everything, budgeting takes practice, but after a few months of sticking to it and being disciplined with yourself, the relief and sense of empowerment that comes with being in control of your financial situation will outweigh the small sacrifices.
