Student Bank Charges
Student Bank Charges
Student bank charges are the same as regular bank charges, those which people have started claiming back since the Office of Fair Trading deemed them unlawful. These charges are implemented for such things as exceeding overdrafts and bouncing cheques or direct debits due to insufficient funds. They were deemed unfair because they do not reflect the true costs incurred by the banks for such activities; they have charged as much as £35 when the actual cost is estimated at £4.50. You can claim student bank charges back by:
- Writing to your bank to request a list of the charges made, then writing again to request that they be repaid to you with interest, or
- Letting an intermediary company do all the work for you and claim back the student bank charges on your behalf, they operate on a no win-no fee basis and can speed up your claim whilst improving your chances of success by having agreements with many of the banks.

Students are more likely to have exceeded overdraft limits and incur account penalties and these charges are often made each day the account is in breech of your agreement with the bank, so it is worth making inquiries as you might be owed more in student bank charges than you think.
