Working out a student budget is extremely important if you do not want to leave university with huge amounts of debt to start off your future career and life with. There are lot of expenses to take into account at university, so by setting out a realistic budget and sticking to it, you are more likely to manage it without finding yourself in dire financial difficulties and having to ask your parents for money every 5 minutes.

When setting out your budget, take the following into consideration:

  • Tuition fees and books
  • Rent and cost of living such as food, bills, etc
  • Travel costs, e.g. local and vacation travel
  • Books, supplies etc
  • Home/Contents insurance
  • Extras such as shopping, entertainment and socialising – only spend as much as your budget will allow

There is assistance available to you that can help you if you are in financial difficulty already, such as the Student Loan for Tuition Fees and Student Loan for Maintenance, which can go a long way without the need for credit cards and overdrafts. Implementing a budget and working hard at sticking to it can help you to end your university career without a pile of debts hanging over you which might affect any future credit you apply for, such as mortgages.
