Student Funding
Student Funding
University life can be very costly, with tuition fees, books, housing and socialising all adding up, so it is important to look into the different types of student funding available to you. It comes in various forms, the primary ones being:
-
Student loans – the most common form of student funding, designed specifically for students, seperate ones for fees and living costs. Interest-free while you are studying and you do not have to start repaying it until your income exceeds a certain amount
-
Grants – funds from the government that you do not have to repay
-
Bursaries – administered by the university, usually on a most-deserving and first come first served basis, for those suffering financial hardship and who have already received the maximum loans available to them
-
Scholarships – usually awarded for academic or athletic excellence
Other types of funding such as student overdrafts and credit cards are also made widely available to students, but should be approached with caution, as it is easy to let your financial situation spiral out of control. Approach the more failsafe forms of student funding first.
