Finding the right breakdown cover policy
You will find there are a variety of different providers of breakdown insurance, and each will have its own options. Many providers of cover allow you purchase their services at different levels of cover so you can tailor your policy to not pay for cover you don’t feel you need.
The names and features of these cover levels will vary by insurer but may include:
- Roadside assistance: The most basic package typically offered. Provides cover for breakdowns that occur over a set distance from your home address (breakdowns often need to be over a quarter of a mile or a mile depending on provider). If the vehicle cannot be fixed by the roadside then you will also be offered a tow to a nearby garage.
- Home Assistance: Offers you the same cover as roadside assistance but includes cover for vehicle breakdowns that occur at or near your home.
- Recovery: If your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside then having a recovery package will give you the option of being taken to any mainland UK location of your choosing along with your vehicle and passengers rather than to just the nearest garage.
- Onward Travel: presents the policy holder with alternatives with which to continue their journey if their car cannot be fixed at the roadside, could include the provision of a courtesy car, costs for public transport or overnight accommodation at a nearby hotel.
- European Cover: Provides you with breakdown cover for driving on the continent.
Personal and vehicle cover
Many insurers also give you the choice of insuring a vehicle so it is covered for breakdowns regardless who is driving it when one occurs, or taking out a personal policy meaning they have breakdown cover in any car they drive.
