What can van hire insurance cover?


Many van hire insurance products cover accidental damage, fire, theft and malicious damage to the hired vehicle and loss or damage to tyres, windscreen, and loss of use of the vehicle. Some of the other things that might be covered as standard by a good quality van hire insurance policy include:

  • Cover for single hire periods of up to two weeks
  • Cover for vans up to 7.5 metric tonnes
  • Key cover
  • Baggage cover
  • Personal accident insurance
  • Towing cover – if your rental van requires it
  • Misfueling – if you accidentally put the wrong fuel into your hired van, you could be covered for this

Optional additions to your van hire insurance 

If you wish to do so, you can often add your own choice of extra cover to the policy by adding the following optional extras: 

  • Extended van hire cover – you may be able to extend your rental van insurance period up to 60 days
  • Some van hire insurance providers allow two named drivers to rent vans independently of each other
  • Battery Failure Cover – insurance for the cost of replacing the van battery
  • Collision Damage Waiver Insurance – this could cover you up to £50,000 for total loss or theft of the hired vehicle

What does van hire insurance NOT cover?

  • This type of van insurance is Intended for people renting a van as a one off or only occasionally – if you are a tradesperson looking at renting a replacement vehicle this may be covered by your commercial vehicle insurance policy
  • You may not be covered for breakdowns and will usually need to purchase separate breakdown cover for this
