A survey by the British Bankers’ Association (BBA) revealed last week that credit card borrowing increased in October.

BBA director of statistics David Dooks said the increase was “consistent with a slight upturn in retail sales”.

However, he said that consumers remained cautious about borrowing given the country’s huge credit debts.

UK shoppers are also hitting the High Street in greater numbers as retailers report a slight revival in sales.

Shoppers were warned to steer clear of store credit cards earlier this month by financial comparison website moneysupermarket.com.

A study from the website found UK consumers are paying £100 million a year more than they need to in interest and other charges on branded cards from outlets like Ikea and Debenhams.
