Credit card airline tickets phishing fraud uncovered

08 April 2005
Consumers are being warned about a fraudulent phishing operation taking place whereby unsuspecting internet users are cheated into providing their contact details to purchase bogus flights.

According to Panda Software, over the last few days several websites have been detected that are offering cheap flights when really they are interested in users’ credit card details.

Internet surfers who search for cheap airline ticket deals can find themselves directed to these bogus sites, entering their credit card details only to suffer a double scam when a screen informs them their payment has been unsuccessful and a postal order is requested.

“Users are best advised to treat ‘bargains’ with suspicion, and only make online purchases from trusted sites,” says Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs.

“In any event, if in doubt, it is a good idea to search for information about the website in question on the internet.”

IT security companies are working together to protect and inform internet users about the dangers of phishing frauds, where people are cheated into giving out their personal details.
