Slimmers spend £s to lose pounds, says Virgin Money

08 February 2005
Over two million people made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight in 2005, and used their credit cards to help them keep it.

New research by Virgin Money Credit Card suggests dieters are spending an average of £34 a month on accessories to help them lose weight.

The huge range of books, slimming classes and DVDs available in today’s market can clearly prove a temptation, with a quarter of those surveyed using their credit cards to pick up the bill.

But Scott Mowbray of Virgin Money Credit Card warned slimmers not to add unwanted £s to their credit cards as they lose their unwanted pounds.

“To avoid fattening up credit card bills, diet spenders should look at cards with a 0 per cent balance transfer deals, low standard rates and at least 59 days interest free period,” Mr Mowbray advised.

If dieters spend wisely, they can see results, however.

The research showed dieters to be losing an average of five pounds per month at a cost of £7 per pound lost.
