In fact, 69 per cent of the entirety of the EU’s online credit and debit card spending is coming from the UK.

“The growth in internet shopping over the last few years has been exponential . . . The UK continues to dominate the market, but other countries are beginning to catch up,” said vice president of Visa Europe, Hugo Bottelier.

That travel and entertainment dominated online credit card sales, Visa Europe noted, with internet bookings of aeroplane tickets, hotel reservations and theatre/cinema seats still growing across the region
