Critical Illness Insurance Exclusions

critical illness insurance

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has stated that there are a number of things that may be excluded from critical illness insurance. Some of the exclusions in the ABI’s critical insurance model include:

  • Any illness as a result of alcohol consumption or drug taking.
  • Illnesses caused through criminal acts.
  • Flying- any flying activity that does not include passenger on commercial plane.
  • Illnesses caused through the partaking of dangerous sports or hobbies.
  • HIV/ AIDS if contracted through drug use or sexual intercourse.
  • If you have lived outside of the UK and EU for longer than one year.
  • Illness or injury that has been self inflicted or on purpose.
  • Any illness acquired due to a failure to follow medical advice.
  • Illnesses caused during war or civil uproar.

You should talk to a financial advisor or a medical professional if you feel that any of the above could affect your taking out critical illness insurance. The exclusions may not necessarily prevent you from obtaining an insurance policy although you may find it a little more difficult. As with all insurance any failure to disclose relevant information could result in the termination of cover, meaning any future claim might not be met.
