BT takes on Sky by offering Sky Sports for less

01 July 2010 / by Rachael Stiles

BT has announced that it will now be offering Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 to its digital TV customers.

Following a ruling by Ofcom which said that Sky had to make its sports channels available to other digital TV providers at regulated prices, in the name of competition, BT is making it available to its customers from today.

On a month-by-month basis, BT Vision customers can get Sky Sports 1 or Sky Sports 2 for £11.99 a month for one, or £16.99 a month for both.

Customers who opt for a broadband and phone bundle for 24 months can save on their sports intake, choosing Sky Sports 1, ESPN and ‘on demand’ sport for £6.99 a month, or Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, ESPN and ‘on demand’ sport for £11.99 a month.

The £11.99 deal will shows that BT is taking on its competitors in a price war – BT says it will save sports fans £205 compared to the equivalent package from Sky, and £281 compared to Virgin Media’s prices.

BT said in a statement that it has launched the Sky Sports offerings in time for the kick off of the Premier League football season on 14 August.

Commenting, Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT Retail, said: “Football fans will be cheering our new prices, which mark an end to paying for basic channels when you only want the sport.”

He also said that “A more competitive market will ensure that customers continue to get the best sport for the sharpest prices and this opening of the market will be in the best interests of customers.”

Michael Phillips of Digitalchoices.co.uk welcomes the fact that BT has priced its broadband, phone and TV sports bundle so aggressively – “Sky, Virgin Media and BT now all have genuine solutions for sports fans.”

“The coming season’s pay-TV decision for football fans has just got a lot harder.  With first year cost savings of over £100, BT has priced its Sky Sports 1 and 2 with ESPN offering to warrant serious consideration from anyone looking to bundle their TV with broadband and phone.”
