Energy firms ‘biggest source of rip-off complaints’

14 January 2008 / by None
A survey conducted by the YouGov on behalf of the Sunday Times has found that energy providers are the biggest source of complaints for consumers.

Figures show that energy firms are ahead of rail firms, petrol companies, council tax and dentists in terms of complaints, with only four per cent feeling that they get a fair deal.

Despite the results, regulator Ofgem has announced it has no intention of referring the “big six” energy firms to competition authorities, according to the Press Association.

Commenting on the decision, an Ofgem spokesman said: “Britain has one of the most competitive energy markets in Europe, with changing market share between the companies, price differences and good levels of switching.”

He went on to say that they will only take action if there is evidence of “anti-competitive behaviour”.

However, in light of imminent price hikes announced by NPower, independent watchdog Energywatch has renewed its calls for the energy market to be referred to the Competition Commission.
