The results will inform a second planned to see whether people want to embrace new payment methods and mobile applications.

Partners in the second trial will include O2, Visa Europe, Nokia, Transport for London and Transys.

The initial pilot scheme will supply 500 selected customers in the south-east with a mobile credited with an Oyster travel card for journeying around London.

In addition, 225 of these customers will each be able to access a £200 fund to enable them to make contactless payments via a single touch of their mobile against a payment terminal.

Barclaycard’s head of research and development Colin Swain said: “We continually investigate new ways of making our customers’ lives easier and giving them choice and we are excited by the many opportunities mobile devices could bring.”

Recently Barclaycard launched its OnePulse card, combining an Oyster travel card with a credit card and cashless facility.
