A-level media studies students will be allowed to use MP3 players and mobile phones as part of their coursework under new regulations from exam board OCR. The course, which will be launched in September, has been altered to help students develop new technological skills using the latest gadgets.

The exam board said that there has been increased demand for this type of modern and creative qualification. Media studies students will be encouraged to use podcasts, blogs and DVDs when they present work, and projects will include promotional material for various media including films and computer games. Podcasting or blogging material will reportedly account for one-fifth of the overall course marks.

OCR spokesperson Paul Dodd said: “Our new media studies A-level reflects significant media developments in recent years and gives students the opportunity to use modern channels of communication such as websites, blogs and MP3 players to present their work.”

According to reports, media studies is one of the fastest growing A-level subjects currently on offer. “We are providing a range of interesting project briefs to engage students and inspire them to produce creative projects through contemporary channels,” added Mr Dodd.

However, with students carrying increasingly expensive items around, there could be a greater risk of losing possessions, or having expensive items stolen. High-value goods such as the new Apple iPhone are a tempting target for thieves, so parents are advised to check home or contents insurance policies to ensure goods are covered.

It is also worth comparing deals as there can be considerable variations in price and level of cover offered. Many will protect goods that are taken out of the home, although this depends on the insurance provider.
