Car breakdown cover doesn’t always include filling up at the wrong pump

Drivers who put the wrong fuel in their car might find that their car breakdown cover does not cover the cost of recovery to get it repaired.
Financial research company Defaqto has found that 23 per cent of car breakdown cover policies do not offer cover for mis-fuelling, so in addition to the cost of repairing the damage caused, drivers would also have to pay to get their car towed to a mechanic.
Mike Powell, Insight Analyst for General Insurance at Defaqto said that “even those motor breakdown policies that do cover such an eventuality will tend to find that the extent of the coverage is limited to towing the car to a garage or to their destination.”
Another 14 per cent of car breakdown cover providers do not offer cover if a driver runs out of fuel, Defaqto’s research discovered.
More than 100,000 motorists put the wrong fuel in their cars every year, according to the AA, and it is one of the 10 most common problems dealt with by AA motor breakdown patrols, Defaqto said.
Mr Powell concluded: “Motorists need to be aware that there is a wide variation in the type of coverage offered by motor breakdown policies even beyond the better known classifications such as roadside assistance, home service, towing, onward travel, replacement car, hotel expenses and European cover.”
