Rugby World Cup Fans May Need Car Insurance ‘conversions’

Rugby fans are being advised to check car insurance policies before travelling to Rugby World Cup fixtures in France in the coming weeks. The competition will take place from September 8 to October 20. Insurance company NFU Mutual is urging drivers to check that they are insured to drive abroad.
Company representative Laura Wood says: “As travel plans are finalised and the excitement builds for fans of all of the home nations, insurance can be the last thing on your mind. However, driving on unfamiliar foreign roads can be a tricky business. It is important that you check whether you are covered in the event of an accident or theft.”
Fans are also being encouraged to keep cars in good condition before setting off for the Rugby World Cup if they hope to see players such as Jonny Wilkinson and Phil Vickery. This includes keeping fluids topped up and checking tyres and bulbs. Windscreens should be free of chips and wipers should be working properly.
Documents such as tax and MoT paperwork must be kept up-to-date and the logbook, V5 and insurance documents should be kept in the car.
“Naturally, when you are making a long trip you should ensure that your car is in good working order. Not only is this a matter of safety, but on the whole, the general conditions of your car insurance policy will also state that you have a duty to take care of your vehicle. You should do everything you can to keep the car in a roadworthy condition and to safeguard all your property from risks,” says Ms Wood.
The company also recommends that drivers familiarise themselves with the rules of the road in France such as alcohol levels and speed limits. Anyone travelling at more than 25km/h over the speed limit may have their licence confiscated there and then.
