Saga has extended its car insurance to include healthcare cover following an accident, available as an optional extra.

The new add-on offers customers of Saga car insurance the option to choose protection in case they are involved in a road accident which requires medical care.

Saga is offering the new car insurance

cover to reflect the fact that 250,000 people were injured in road accidents in the UK last year, and that the majority of these incidents resulted in minor injury.

Also, Saga reports that, in its experience, health concerns are a major source of stress and worry for the over 50s, and hopes that the new Accident Healthcare cover will “give their customers the best chance of a speedy recovery”.

Accident Healthcare will provide up to £1million cover for any private non-emergency treatment recommended by the customer’s NHS doctor, after any initial emergency treatment has been received, for the treatment of injuries sustained as a result of a road traffic accident in the UK.

All new and existing Saga car insurance customers will be able to get Accident Healthcare as an optional extra on their policy.

The additional protection will cost the equivalent of £3.95 more a month for individual cover, or £5.45 a month for couples, covering injuries sustained in the customer’s car as a driver, as a passenger in another vehicle, or even if they are injured as a pedestrian or cyclist.

“Even a minor road accident can require medical treatment that can be a drawn out process,” Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, commented. “At times like these, older people in particular value quick access to high quality care that private healthcare provides.”
