Medical Insurance and Pre-Existing Conditions

One of the main things that insurance companies will take into account when deciding whether or not to offer you medical insurance is any pre-existing conditions you may have. There are a number of ways in which any illnesses or treatments you have previously undergone can affect any medical insurance quotes you are offered.

If you decide to switch your medical insurance policy to another insurance provider, any pre-existing conditions will again have an effect.

Either your new insurer will match the exclusions that were written into your previous medical insurance policy, or they simply exclude cover for any conditions that you suffer from at the present, even if it is covered by the insurer that you are switching from.

Having this general knowledge of how pre-existing conditions affect medical insurance will help you a great deal when you are comparing medical insurance quotes, as will tools such as the product comparison table below.

There are two main options you can take when getting medical insurance. Any pre-existing conditions you have suffered from will affect your policy in different ways depending upon which option you pick:

Full medical underwriting
This is where you asked to give a medical history to the insurers, who may also go to your doctor. It is important to give all relevant information about any pre-existing conditions or the medical insurance policy will become void later on down the line.

Moratorium underwriting
Here, the company will not take a medical history, instead there is a blanket lack of insurance for any pre-existing conditions, illnesses you have been treated for or have medication you have been placed on in the past. Most companies will not look aback any further than 5 years.
