Call for ‘earlier’ pension change

18 January 2008 / by None
A Bolton MP has spoken out on the link between pensions and earnings, saying it should be addressed earlier than the reforms planned for 2012.

In the wake of the centenary of the state pension, Bolton north-east MP David Crausby has added his name to an early day motion from the House of Commons which is asking for the change, reports the Bolton News.

He commented: “I am urging the government to consider restoring the link between pensions and earnings earlier than announced in order to help pensioners, particularly those entirely dependent on the basic state pension.”

Mr Crausby paid tribute to the “pension pioneers” of 1898 who brought about the first state pension and spoke of the benefits already achieved for pensioners such as off-peak travel and the winter fuel allowance, the report continues.

Elsewhere, allegations have been put to the Scottish Parliament regarding a police pensions crisis that could lead to a shortfall of £50 million next year.
