ABI: 1 in 4 without contents insurance

12 October 2007
A significant number of people do not have their home contents covered by insurance, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Kelly Ostler, a spokesperson for the ABI, estimated that one in four do not have contents insurance, although most have buildings insurance as required by their mortgage provider.

"It is content that tends to be neglected - especially for people on lower incomes," Ms Ostler remarked.

The price of policies can depend on the type of area in which an individual lives, she added, stating that crime can be a significant factor in the way premiums are calculated.

According to the AA's latest British Insurance Premium Index, the average quote for a home contents policy has increased by two per cent over the course of the last quarter.

John Close, insurer relations director at the firm, said rises in premiums are the result of the flooding which affected several areas of the UK this summer.
