American Express: Five million Brits go without contents insurance

17 January 2007
Despite severe weather warnings forecasting flooding and gales in the UK, a fifth of households do not have the proper insurance to cover their homes in the event of a flood or severe wind damage, and as many as five million have no contents insurance at all.

The findings, from the British Insurance Brokers' Association and American Express have prompted warnings from insurance providers urging homeowners to ensure they have comprehensive buildings and contents insurance cover, especially in the current climate, where storms are threatening to cause major damage across the country.

The Environment Agency this week issued 59 flood warnings for locations across the UK while the Met Office warned of winds up to 80 miles per hour, which could disrupt travel, yet still many homeowners are failing to protect their home adequately.

Providers have emphasized the importance, after the festive period, of checking that insurance is fully updated to cover all new, valuable acquisitions such as electronic equipment
