Don't put your home at risk this spring

07 April 2005
AA Insurance is warning British householders to spring-clean their home insurance to ensure they have adequate cover reflecting the full value of their contents.

The insurer is pointing out that underestimating the value of possessions is a simple mistake - but one that can cost dearly, as most insurers will not match the actual value of underinsured possessions should you come to make a claim.

According to AA Insurance, most people also never check their buildings cover, but rebuilding and redecorating can mean that premiums should be increased.

"We believe up to a quarter of householders have no contents cover - and of those who do, up to two thirds are underinsured," explained Kevin Sinclair, director of AA Insurance.

"More people renew their home insurance in the spring than at any other time so now is a good time both to make sure you are properly covered and are getting good value for your premium."

According to the AA's British Insurance Premium Index, home insurance is good value for money - the average cost of contents insurance has risen by only five per cent over the past decade, whilst buildings cover rose by just one per cent over the same period.
