According to new research from home insurance provider More Than, estate agents showing people around their homes while they are out made over two-thirds (69 per cent) of respondents "uncomfortable".
Estate agents (18 per cent) were only out-voted by window cleaners (31 per cent) and builders and decorators (26 per cent) when Britons were asked which professionals they would be least comfortable leaving in their home alone.
"Moving home is stressful enough without having to consider whether the person who is supposed to be assisting you is trustworthy," said Craig Allen, More Than Home Insurance manager.
"While we hope that, for most people, the experience of dealing with estate agents is a smooth one, there are those for whom problems do arise," he added.
Mr Allen continued by saying he would recommend adding his company's Family Legal Services to home insurance policies for those who were concerned about the trustworthiness of estate agents.
It offers a 24-hour legal helpline, online legal documents and general legal cover for policyholders.
More people have become concerned about the subject since the BBC's "Whistleblower" programme exposed dodgy dealings by some of the leading UK estate agents. To read more about insurance, click here.
