Halifax Home Insurance warns of winter damage

12 October 2005
Halifax Home Insurance has reported a 40 per cent increase in winter insurance claims since 2001, and is urging homeowners to do a house 'MOT' using their new checklist before winter hits.

The report coincides with the recent announcement by the Met office that this winter is set to be the coldest in a decade.

A spokesperson for Halifax Home Insurance said: "Every year millions of motorists put their vehicles through an MOT at a cost of around £40 - but few homeowners do the same with their home.

According to the insurance company, it dealt with around 20,000 weather-related claims last year, adding up to a total of £17 million worth of damage to homes.

This year alone Halifax Home Insurance has received over 23,000 storm claims and paid out over £20 million to homeowners.

The Halifax Home MOT checklist advises homeowners to check tiles, guttering, chimneys and even boilers.

The checklist is available from the Halifax website.
