Halifax finds burglars enjoying warm weather

09 August 2005
As even the typical British summer brings warm spells to much of the country, Halifax Home Insurance is warning homeowners to take extra care to guard against burglars.

According to the insurer, thieves can enjoy rich pickings in the summer, when warm temperatures encourage many people to leave doors and windows open, providing burglars with easy access to their most treasured possessions.

Halifax Home Insurance sees an increase in claims for unforced burglary of more than a fifth (21 per cent) during the summer months, with householders in the north-east proving particularly vulnerable to opportunistic thieves.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "Each summer we see a dramatic increase in the number of unforced entry claims.

"Burglars can be in and out of a property in minutes, often whilst unsuspecting occupiers are sitting in the garden or watching television in another room.

"Unfortunately those that don't keep home security at the forefront of their mind may find that they are not covered for any resulting stolen items."

With all home insurance policies requiring householders to take "reasonable care" to secure their buildings – including keeping doors and windows closed – Halifax warns those enjoying summer not to let thieves have an easy ride.
