Leeds top for burglaries, says Halifax Home Insurance

The town in England and Wales most afflicted by burglaries is Leeds, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The northern city has topped a poll of burglary hotspots conducted by the insurer, which claims that homeowners in Leeds have made the greatest number of claims following burglaries.

Several other northern cities, Doncaster and Wakefield and Huddersfield, came second and third in the poll, which has been released by Halifax Home Insurance in an effort to warn householders to ensure that they have adequate home insurance cover.

According to the insurer, claims for burglaries increase by up to 16 per cent during the winter months, with claim volumes standing at 12 per cent above average.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Our claims data shows a strong seasonal pattern with above average claim volumes for theft from October through to March."
"It's important to take time out to check your home security before the nights start to draw in."
Newport and central London saw the greatest value of items stolen in burglaries, the insurer revealed.
