New Year's Eve parties wreak havoc

30 December 2005
Damage caused by revellers attending New Year's parties can reach hundreds of pounds, says Cornhill Direct.

A survey by the insurance provider found a quarter of Brits have attended a party where something has been damaged or broken. Cornhill Direct says the average claim for a New Year's party disaster is £750.

The insurance provider says wine spills on carpets, broken ornaments and cigarette burns commonly cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage while Scots are the most unruly party guests.

Harry Rule from Cornhill Direct says preparation can protect their houses from unnecessary damage.

He said: "We would strongly recommend that you move as many of your possessions out of the way as possible. Anything can happen when New Year party fever takes hold."

A recent survey by Barclays Insurance Services found that Brits spend, on average, £275 on New Year's parties – not including any damage caused by over-zealous partygoers.
