New women-only car insurer Sheilas' Wheels, launched by the founder of Direct Line and chairman of, has beaten other female-orientated car insurance companies at the price game.

Research by insurance comparison website found that premiums for the new car insurer were up to £100 cheaper than other insurers like Diamond and Diva.

A spokesperson for the price comparison website said: "Typically, women-only insurers are not necessarily the great value they claim to be and certainly not necessarily cheaper than mainstream insurers.

"However, in our research, Sheilas’ Wheels has proved to be nearly £100 cheaper than Diamond and, and topped the table in one of the comparative scenarios we ran."

The car insurance offers a 75 per cent no claims discount, handbag and contents cover in the event of theft and a 24-hour counselling hotline for drivers traumatised on the roads.

There are currently 14.4 million female drivers on Britain's roads.
