The law states that banks and credit card companies can only impose charges which are in proportion to their costs; however, if you think that you have been a victim of unfair credit card charges, compensation may be available. Below are several steps you can take:
- Check the 'new transactions' section of your credit card statement - this is where you will find any charges made to your account
- Write a letter stating that you want a refund
- If you haven't received a reply within two weeks offering a full or partial refund or rejection, you should write again, setting a deadline for a response and stating you are willing to take them to a small claims court
- Consider taking your complaint to the small claims court if you are still unsatisfied with the response from your credit card company
Unfair credit card charges compensation can be claimed for up to a period of six years after the date of the charge.
