Emergency breakdown cover

There are a number of providers of emergency breakdown cover, so it worth shopping around before you take out a policy to compare the market and find the best deal on the level of cover you desire, remember however that the cheapest option may not always be the best in addition to considering price you might also want to factor other things into your decision such as;

  • Average response time
  • Customer ratings
  • Join up incentives
  • Member benefits
  • Number of free call-outs allowed a year
  • Whether a provider offers their service nationwide

Personal or vehicle cover

A provider may offer you the choice of taking out either personal or vehicle cover, it’s important to understand what each means in order to make the best choice for your specific situation.

  • Vehicle Cover: Essentially this covers a vehicle for breakdowns no matter who is driving it when one occurs, some providers will let you add additional vehicles onto the same policy for a discounted price.

  • Personal Cover: This type of cover works on an individual basis, so the policy holder will be insured for vehicle breakdowns in any privately registered car. As such this level of cover is normally more expensive. Some providers allow joint or household policies which provides cover for multiple individuals who live at the same address.

Levels of cover

So you don’t need to pay extra on cover you do not want many providers let you purchase breakdown insurance at different levels of comprehensiveness so you can tailor your policy to your needs. The names and exact features of these levels  of insurance will vary by provider but may include:

  • Roadside cover: Usually the cheapest level offered by an insurer, providing you breakdown over a set distance from your home it will offer you set amount of time of free roadside labour from a mobile mechanic and if they cannot fix your vehicle there and then it will also include recovery to a nearby garage. The distance your vehicle has to be from your registered home address for your cover to be active varies by provider but is often either 0.25 of a mile or 1 mile.

  • Home cover: This cover level usually includes all of the features of the roadside package, but means you will still be covered for breakdowns that happen near or at your home address.

  • National Recovery: This type of cover means that if your car can’t be mended by the mechanic at the roadside then rather than just being towed to the nearest garage, you get the option of you, your vehicle and any passengers being taken to a single location of your choice anywhere in the UK.

  • Onward Travel: This cover level can present you with more options to continue your journey if your vehicle cannot be readily repaired. This cover level can vary considerably between providers but it might mean your insurer offers you alternative transport costs, overnight accommodation somewhere near where your vehicle is being repaired or a hire car for a limited period of time.

  • European Cover: provides breakdown cover if you are driving elsewhere in Europe than just the UK.
