There are many costs associated with maintaining a vehicle, but while breakdown cover is not compulsory it could save you money and take the stress out of organising a mechanic to come to your aid if your car was to breakdown. If you intend to drive on the Continent however you will need to add Euro cover to your policy or take it out as a standalone product, some providers give you options for single or multi trip cover.

European breakdown cover

While each provider is different, there are significant benefits of taking out European breakdown cover. If you get stranded on the roadside in a country where you may not speak the language having a European cover policy will provide you with a number to call which will organise a mechanic to come to repair or recover your car.

Other benefits of a policy might include:

  • Costs covered for car repatriation
  • Alternative transport provision
  • Accommodation cover
  • Legal cover
  • Translation assistance

Types of European cover

  • UK cover add on: Many providers of UK breakdown cover will allow you to add cover for driving elsewhere in Europe to your standard policy. Some providers will offer it as there most comprehensive level insurance and it will include all previous levels of cover e.g. UK onward travel, home assistance and recovery. Others offer it as an optional add-on when you select your UK level of cover. If you regularly drive around Europe this may work out as a cheaper option than purchasing single or multi trip cover as a standalone product, but obviously if you do not have any future plans to drive elsewhere in Europe then purchasing this cover may be unnecessary. Policies typically limit you to a set number of days a year that you will be covered for driving in Europe, if you spend extended periods driving on the continent it may be possible to purchase additional cover.

  • Standalone product: it is also possible to purchase European cover as a standalone policy, this might work out as cheaper is you have suddenly decided to take your car outside of the UK. There may be options for short trip cover, which will only cover you for a few days of Continental driving, there is also single trip cover which will cover you for a more extended period of driving outside of the United Kingdom, and multi-trip cover which will provide you with cover for a set amount of days driving across Europe within a 12 month period. Some providers break up their coverage into different zones, so you only have to purchase cover for the countries you will actually be driving in, however if you decided to drive in a country not covered by your zone and were to breakdown your provider would not be able to offer you any assistance.

Before you take out a policy

Each provider is different so it worth shopping around to find the best cover option for you. You should check each policy carefully to make sure it fits your needs, for instance if you regularly take caravanning holidays on the Continent you might want to make your provider offers recovery for caravans and trailers.
