Home contents insurance comes in all shapes and sizes and it is important to find the one that's right for you, bearing in mind that it is not always best to go for the cheapest one you can find. Most insurance agencies will provide a summary of your cover, outlining the main advantages as well as items that would be excluded from cover.

With contents insurance, you could expect to be covered for the following things:

  • Personal possessions either in the home or outbuildings.
  • Non-permanent household fittings e.g. carpets and curtains.
  • Accidental damage to possessions such as electrical equipment.

Your policy document will specify what risks are covered, these typically include storms and floods, fire and theft. Many insurers provide additional cover as standard for certain things, for example freezer and shed contents; in this case, policies differ from one company to the next and you should make sure that you shop around and find the most appropriate one for your circumstances.

There are often exclusions for certain high risk items such as office equipment, mobile phones and cameras, which sometimes have to be insured under a separate policy. You can also take out optional extras to your policy to protect things like ornaments, carpets and furniture from accidental damage.

Always check your home contents insurance summary document for key exclusions to your policy. For example, some covers may not include valuables priced above the policy's limit, damage caused by pets etc. If your home is unoccupied for more than 60 days cover could be restricted.
