Medical Insurance Cover

Medical insurance cover…

A private medical insurance policy could help you to take control of your healthcare, by providing you with an alternative to NHS treatments.  Medical insurance is designed to cover the costs of the private medical treatments for ‘acute conditions’.

Insurance providers generally define these acute conditions as illnesses, diseases or injuries that will usually respond effectively to treatment, leaving your health restored to the state it was prior to the illness, disease or injury, or leading you to a full recovery.

The three main appeals of purchasing medical insurance are:

  • The access to readily available and efficient treatments should you fall ill or be injured during the term of your policy
  • The option to choose how you receive any medical treatments – from when and where these are carried out to which specialist will perform them
  • An increase in comfort and convenience whilst undergoing any medical treatments

There are two main types of underwriting that insurance providers may use to provide you with a quote:

Full medical underwriting
This typically involves you providing information about your medical history. The insurer will sometimes also contact your doctor for information.

Moratorium underwriting
You may not be obliged by your insurance provider to disclose information about your medical history. However, for such policies, the insurer will not cover for any conditions present in the last few years (usually five).

There are many different insurance providers who offer quotes for medical insurance that would suit a range of budgets, depending on the level of cover.  As each policy is so different, it is important to be aware of which treatments and diagnoses that each medical insurance policy would and would not cover prior to making decisions about whether to purchase a product.

It is important to note that private medical insurance cover is not usually designed to extend to any long-term treatments for chronic conditions, or for pre-existing health complaints.
