If your bank has fined you £12 or more for exceeding your overdraft, a bounced cheque or a failed direct debit, you can reclaim the bank charges, thanks to April 2006’s ruling by the Office of Fair Trading that such charges are unlawful. A bank charge is supposed to cover the bank’s administration costs of sending out a letter advising the customer that they have broken their contract, i.e. exceeding an agreed overdraft.
