Taxi breakdown cover

Car breakdown insurance policies typically exclude cover for commercially used vehicles; there are however specialist breakdown insurance plans for both single taxis and business fleets, one of which might be appropriate for you. Some providers may put restrictions on the maximum size and weight a vehicle can be to be covered, you may also need to pay extra to cover vehicles that are over a certain age or have over a set amount of miles on the clock although this is not the case with all providers. Many providers will also require you to purchase separate cover for minibuses.

Levels of cover

Some providers of business vehicle breakdown cover make their policies more comprehensive as standard, however as with private vehicle breakdown cover you may still be able to tailor your policy with different cover levels, so you don’t have to pay extra for cover features that you feel you do not need. These levels vary by provider but may include:

  • Roadside Assist: generally the most minimal level of cover available. Provides you with a certain amount of time’s worth of free roadside labour from a mechanic and if they cannot repair the vehicle there it also includes vehicle recovery to a nearby garage.

  • Home Assist: as the basic roadside policy offered by some providers excludes cover for breakdowns that occur at, or within a close proximity of, the vehicle’s registered address, it is necessary to purchase a home assistance package in order to have cover for these instances.

  • Recovery: While basic roadside assistance package include provisions to take the vehicle and driver to a nearby garage, a national recovery option gives the option of both being taken to a location of driver’s choice anywhere in the UK.

Finding the right policy:

Whether you are a self-employed taxi driver or your business operates a large fleet of taxis it is wise to shop around to find the best deal available for the level of cover you need. However in addition to considering the cost of different provider’s policies you may also want to factor other aspects into your decision such as:

  • The number of response vehicles a provider has
  • Reviews from other customers
  • The percentage of vehicles they successfully fix at the roadside
