Nationwide: Avoid credit card rip offs abroad

29 November 2005
Brits holidaying over the winter period could be paying £70 million to use their credit cards abroad, says Nationwide.

The building society says Brits could save over £80 each by switching to one of Nationwide’s credit or debit cards, which offer free card use abroad.

Nationwide says FelxAccount customers saved £8 million and the building society’s credit card holders saved £2.5 million this summer alone.

Nationwide’s executive director, Stuart Bernau, said: “Christmas is already an expensive time and people planning to go abroad this winter should be aware of the hidden charges that most card providers impose on their customers.

“Anyone using a Nationwide FlexAccount debit card or credit card will not be charged any foreign usage fees and will have extra money to enjoy while on holiday.”

The building society says since there are 20 million VISA outlets across the globe plus 855,000 24-hour ATMs, holidaymakers should not need to take traveller’s cheque or foreign currency with them on holiday.
