Virgin expect the card to be of particular benefit to migrant workers, offering a cheaper alternative to cards currently on the market for those who use them to send money to their families abroad.

Cardholders also get discounts on Virgin Group products, such as Virgin Holidays, Virgin Megastores, and Virgin Insurance, which were previously only available to Virgin Credit Card customers.

Migrants and people without access to facilities such as debit cards can now pay for goods online and on the high street with plastic, without having to open a bank account. The card can be topped up at Post Offices, online and at PayPoints nationwide.

The card can also be useful for those who find it difficult to budget, because the card cannot go overdrawn so there are no fees or interest charges and customers can keep an eye on their spending with online statements. It provides travellers with a safer alternative to carrying cash and can be used at ATMs worldwide.

Jayne-Anne Gadhia, Chief Executive of Virgin Money, said: “Almost three million adults in the UK do not use banking facilities and are locked in the cash economy. This card will allow users to buy on the internet, on the high street, and save money on a range of Virgin products.”
