Energy customers urged to switch

17 December 2007 / by None
Energy customers should look to switch suppliers next year if they want to save money on their bills, according to uSwitch.com.

The price comparison site says that some 12.5 million households are losing out on the cheapest deals by failing to shop around and it is urging them to take action.

The average energy bill stands at £912 a year but by switching to a cheaper tariff customers could save up to £325 in 2008, uSwitch.com claims.

“Switching is a painless process,” said Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy. “The best chance that consumers now have of seeing lower energy bills is by taking action themselves.”

uSwitch.com says that to ensure the cheapest possible bills customers should opt for dual fuel accounts and get both gas and electric from the same supplier.

They should also pay by direct debit and sign up to an online plan as providers frequently offer some of their best deals over the internet.

Finding a cheaper energy deal could be particularly beneficial in 2008 as British Gas has recently warned that its prices could rise next year as a result of higher wholesale costs.
