Fix your gas and electricity prices now before it’s too late

29 July 2008 / by Rachel Mason
Following EDF’s announcement of a 17 per cent rise in electricity and 22 per cent hike in gas, Moneysavingexpert.com’s Martin Lewis has told consumers to ‘cap now’ on their gas and electricity tariffs.

The advocate of “consumer revenge” says that EDF will not be the only big supplier to hike its rates, and warns that “the remaining five are likely to follow soon.”

Mr Lewis is advising consumers on his site to switch suppliers to find the best rate and then cap it to avoid massive prices rises.

“With further energy hikes expected next year, everyone can save by choosing a capped tariff. The comparison sites allow you to split out the cheapest caps….just tell it (comparison site) where you live and how big your bills are and it’ll tell you who’s cheapest; and if it can switch you, you’ll get paid cashback and freebies on top.”

And Rachel Mason, from financial comparison site Fairinvestment.co.uk said: “Following EDF’s price hikes, it is more important than ever to ensure you are getting the best energy deal available.

“There are still plenty of competitive deals on the market, but with thousands of tariffs to choose from, it can be hard to know which supplier is actually offering the best deal, and that is where our Gas and Electricity Quotes service can help.

“Just enter your postcode and some details about your current gas and electricity bills, and the system will bring up all the tariffs in your area, comparing price, savings and power ratings.

“You can then filter your results by internet tariffs, green tariffs and capped tariffs.”
