Nokia develops ‘green phone’

13 February 2008 / by None
Mobile phone giant Nokia has developed an ‘eco-phone’ which is made entirely of recycled materials.

The new phone has been developed in a bid to reduce the impact made on the environment made by mobile phone handsets and was unveiled by chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, reports the Guardian.

Addressing the audience, he announced: “It really shows what can be done with materials. It is only a concept now – I cannot make a phone call – but it gives you an insight into how we think we can break new ground.”

Nokia were responsible for around four out of ten of over a billion handsets sold around the world lat year, the report continues.

There is an increased focus on the environmental impact of handsets by campaigners with more than three billion mobile phone users, many of them replacing their handsets regularly, according to the newspaper.

In related news, Nokia has defended its decision to offer internet services, reports the Financial Times.
