As more and more Brits choose to drive abroad as opposed to flying due to rising flight costs, car insurance could become an issue, according to Tescocompare.com.

According to Tescocompare.com, motorists who assume they are automatically covered by their car insurance for driving abroad could be mistaken.

Its research found that for 70 per cent of participants, price remains the most important factor when shopping for car insurance. However, according to Tescocompare.com, this could be a false economy when it comes to driving abroad.

According to the research, while most car insurance policies offer some degree of cover abroad, some providers offer as little as three days cover at third party level, meaning the policy holder is responsible for arranging and paying for additional cover.

However, choosing to pay an extra £45 per year could add 90 days of insurance abroad to an insurance policy, highlighting the need to compare car insurance.

Paul Baxter at Tescocompare.com, said: “Less expensive insurers may quote a low premium for the year, however, when extra foreign cover is charges at a high rate, the savings made by drivers on the year’s premium are cancelled out by add-on items.

“And while you may think third party cover is enough, if you are involved in a shunt in a rural Spanish village, you’ll soon realise that having comprehensive cover is a necessity. Be sure to investigate the policy details before you commit to a premium,” he added.
