Northern Rock has been named best overall lender at Legal & General’s Mortgage Club Awards.

It topped the table with Halifax in second place and Accord Mortgages third.

It order to reach a decision, lenders were rated against a series of criteria including products, service, sales and marketing as well as their ebusiness capability.

The awards, run in association with Mortgage Solutions magazine, saw mortgage brokers who are members of the Legal & General Mortgage Club voting for the awards.

The managing director of intermediary solutions, Graham Newitt, said: “The scale of the Mortgage Club demonstrates Legal & General’s leading position in the UK mortgage market.”

He continued: “Our ‘Principal’ proposition for mortgage advisers post regulation is proving hugely popular and will ensure that we remain a dominant force in the market going forward. Feedback from these awards and our recent regional forums about the proposition is extremely encouraging and recruitment is rapidly approaching our target.”

In the other award categories for lenders, some of the winners included Woolwich, for best lender for products; Halifax, as best lender for service; and BM Solutions, as the best overall specialist lender.

The awards, announced last Friday at a lunch held at the Dorchester Hotel in London, were hosted by Dead Ringers impressionist Jon Culshaw.
