Virgin Media has announced it is trialling the fastest broadband in the UK, with speeds of up to 200Mb.

According to Virgin Media , the trial is the fastest implementation of the super-super-fast technology in the world, beating Japan and the US hands down as they both deliver speeds of below 200Mb.

The pilot began in Kent, but could soon spread to 100 ‘lead adopters’ to create the most advanced broadband service in the UK.

In addition to testing speed, the pilots will also be testing the system’s ability to deliver a number of applications, including TV in High Definition, to test how it will hold up to future trends.

Commenting on the initiative, Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media, said: “We’re really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery. With the only true next generation network in the UK, we’re at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how ‘wideband’ services might be used by customers.”

The pilot will run for six months, before results are analysed and the future of broadband is decided.
