Saga car insurance has found that it is not just the over 50s who enjoy driving simply for pleasure as 46 per cent of all motorists have admitted to doing it too.

With many Brits deciding to cut the cost of their holidays by driving to their destination both in the UK and abroad, Saga is urging drivers to ensure they are prepared for the long distance journeys.

The survey found that three quarters of drivers set off without taking any emergency equipment in case of a breakdown while also forgetting to take any details of their breakdown policy.

According to Saga car insurance it is the under 50s who set off on journeys most unprepared for any problems, with many more concerned with checking they have taken their stereo system.

They found that 62 per cent of younger drivers ensure they have entertainment for the journey whilst 61 per cent fail to check their spare tyre.

In contrast, more than half of the over 50s checked their spare tyre before setting off.

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Goodsell, Executive Chairman, Saga Group, said: “It is good to see that people still enjoy driving their cars for pleasure and don’t just view them as a means of getting from A to B.

“It would seem that the under 50s could learn much from more experienced drivers when it comes to preparing their cars, and themselves, ahead of a long journey.”
