British Gas goes green

19 April 2007
British Gas has launched a new part to its business which will aim to help people manage a greener, more climate-conscious lifestyle.

The new branch of the company, British Gas New Energy, will focus on the increasing demand for energy to go green, by helping homes and businesses make improvements to support this.

Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of British Gas parent company Centrica, explained: “Most UK homes are poorly insulated and the energy loss and emissions levels from them are much higher than they could be.

“We can use our expertise in the green energy sector to help homeowners significantly reduce their impact on the environment and take a lead in this rapidly growing new business area.”

Among the initiatives to be pursued by the company will be a service providing Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which anyone selling a home will require from June.

It will also offer solar heating panels to homeowners, which will not only help them save money on their energy bills but could see £500 knocked off their council tax bill too.
