As energy suppliers cut their prices this summer, now could be the right time to switch your energy provider, according to Which? Switch.

Data compiled by the independent consumer group shows that energy bills have been reduced in recent months and switching now could mean you pay less for your electricity and gas in the winter.

British Gas has in recent months cut its gas and electricity prices by 10 per cent while E.ON, EDF Energy and Npower have cut their electricity prices by around nine per cent.

In January this year, Scottish Power reduced its gas prices by nearly eight per cent as Scottish and Southern Energy also cut their electricity prices by nine per cent.

However, these reductions still don’t balance out the increase consumers saw last year when gas prices increased by almost 28 per cent, while electricity bills rose by 14 per cent.

Commenting on the findings, Alison Morrison at Which? Switch said: “Now that all of the major energy companies have cut their prices, this could be a great opportunity to switch suppliers or tariffs.

“It seems strange to think about your heating bills in summer, but this is a decision that could benefit customers all year round.”

She added that savings can also be made with simple steps such as paying bills monthly or by paying by direct debit.
