Swiftcover.com has come out on top in a survey of the UK’s most competitive car insurance providers from moneysupermarket.com, boasting the cheapest average premium for all categories of driver at £276.

Also featured among the top five best value insurers were the Post Office, with an average premium of £306.08, followed by Zurich at £317.44 and More Than at £322.55.

Perhaps surprisingly, Debenhams, a lesser-known player in the car insurance field, was asking customers to pay the most for their cover, with an average premium of almost £1,500 through 2006.

Leading brand name AA Insurance was also surprisingly uncompetitive, far behind other leading names Barclays and RAC, which made the top ten.

AA’s performance was particularly “disappointing” given its reputation, Richard Mason, managing director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said.

By contrast, the “younger, nimbler online insurers” were able to provide “consistently competitive premiums given their lower overheads”, Mr Mason added.

Customers are advised to watch out for rising prices as their one-year ‘honeymoon’ period with an insurer ends, Mr Mason stressed, suggesting the eager bargain-hunter might think about switching provider once a year and enjoy a perennial honeymoon.
