Insuring your piano or keyboard

Piano insurance provides peace of mind that in the event your piano is damaged, you can get it replaced or repaired without having to worry about the cost.

Musical instruments can be expensive and fragile, and are not always covered by home insurance.

Cover can be arranged if you teach at home and you can also insure your sheet music.

A good piano insurance policy should include:

  • Flexible cover if your piano or keyboard is lost, damaged or stolen
  • Third party liability cover
  • A new for old replacement
  • No excess unless you want to reduce your premium
  • Personal accident cover
  • Optional cover such as breakdown of equipment and ‘in vehicle’ cover for on the road

What types of piano can I insure?

You can insure a range of different piano and keyboard types against theft, loss and damage including:

  • Acoustic piano insurance
  • Digital piano insurance
  • Upright piano insurance
  • Grand piano insurance
  • Keyboard insurance
  • Organ insurance
  • Piano insurance
  • Synthesiser insurance

What kind of insurance do I need for my piano?

You can insure your piano via your home insurance policy but you will need to let your insurer know. The risk is that cover will only be set up to a set amount and there may be exclusions on the type of damage that qualifies for a payout.

In many cases a stand-alone policy for your piano may be a better option. A bespoke policy means that you can insure the instrument for what it is worth and cover more instances of damage if they occur e.g. flood and fire.

In insuring the piano having a record of its brand, serial number model and size and ideally a recipt of what you paid for it to provide to the insurer means you are more likely to get a true compensation amount if repairs need to be paid for or a replacement is required. Taking photos of the piano for your records is recommended. If you are unsure of what the piano is worth getting a financial appraisal may be prudent.
