Saga consistently offers the most competitive car insurance quotes according to moneysupermarket.com.

Almost 14 million car insurance quotes were analysed by the price comparison site in 2008 to reveal that Saga car insurance offers an average premium of £176 a year.

The over 50s car insurance provider was £30 cheaper than Lloyds TSB who were in second place.

These figures also show that the average premium for the top ten providers of 2008 was £240.75, which is over £55 cheaper compared to the average premium in the previous year.

Reacting to the news, Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “As an over 50s only insurer, it is clear Saga’s average premium benefits from the provider ‘cherry picking’ a lower risk insurance group – they don’t cover younger drivers who would certainly boost up their average premium prices.”

Mr Sweeney adds he pleased to see the average cost of insurance premium falling: “It is great news for the motorist that insurers are offering increased competition meaning the average premium for the current top ten is over £55 lower for car owners than the previous analysis,” he said.

But he urged consumers when they are searching for deals to “consider not only cost as a principle factor, but also look into the cover that best suits your lifestyle and needs”.
